Preparation Here are some tips to become a thrifty shopper:
Shop sales and use coupons, but buy only if you really need the item.
Check unit prices on items.
Use a list and stick to it to avoid impulse buys.
Go grocery shopping only once a week.
Look for bargains above or below eye level on the shelves. The best bargains are often hidden on the top or bottom shelf and think of all the great exercise you get reaching and kneeling.
Comparison shopto find a store that offers an item for less or try a lesser-known brand.
Position Sit at a table.
Directions 1.Make a shopping list for a real or imaginary meal. If possible, use a grocery sale sheet. You may want to plan your meal based on sale items. For example, you can substitute green beans for broccoli if green beans are on sale this week. 2.Remember to plan a balanced meal by including all the food groups. See activity PSY-b5 for more information. 3.Check for any coupons that fit your list. 4.Check the unit prices for the best deal. For example, a 2 pound bag of rice costs $1.68 and a 1 pound bag of rice costs $.94. Which package is the better value? (The unit price for a 2 pound bag of rice is $.84per pound and the 1 pound bag of rice is $.94. The 2 poundbag is a better value if you can use it all before it goes bad.)
5.To figure the unit price, divide the price by the amount of product. 6.Which item is the best value in each example: *2 pound package of ham on sale 3 for $5.00 or 1 pound package of ham for $1.05?
16 oz. of cereal for $2.49 or 24.5 oz. of cereal for $3.95?
12 fl. oz. can frozen orange juice concentrate which makes 64 fl. oz. for $1.25 or 12 fl. oz. can which makes 48 fl. oz. for $1.15?
16 oz. of name brand cereal for $2.99 minus a $.50 coupon or 20 oz. box of no name cereal for $2.95 with no coupon? (This is close, so a name brand may be the better deal if there is a quality difference. This is an example of the coupon item still being more costly than the lesser-known brand.)
12 roll pack of paper towels for $9.50 or 2 roll pack for $1.66? (The 12 roll pack is less expensive, but you may need to figure the value of storage space and how quickly you will use them.)
