My OTA Students Love your text!

How many times have our students complained about the lack of occupation-based practice in the clinic? Despite our efforts to teach them occupation-focused evaluation and intervention, without the proper mentorship in the clinic, they may revert to impairment based, bottom-up approaches. It is important for educators to research techniques that will not only assist our students with maintaining their knowledge, but also those methods of facilitating the practicing therapist with changing their focus to occupation. Empowering Occupational Therapy is a book that intends to give the practicing clinician ready-made occupation-based activities that can be individualized to a variety of clients. This book's value, as a contributor to facilitating occupation-based practice, in students and clinicians, should be researched..

These activities are certainly focused so that a client could easily work through them on his or her own. [They are] readily adaptable by an occupational therapy practitioner for clients who are functioning at higher or lower levels.

Charla and Debbie,

I wanted to write and let you know how much I am enjoying the Empowering Occupational Therapy book I recieved.  I am a student at St. Louis University and I am getting ready to start my fieldwork of my Senior year.  Your book has allowed me to be more creative in my selection of therapeutic options when dealing with clients of varying diagnosis and ages.  It has been a great tool and resource.

Thank you and I hope you continue to Empower OT's.

I work in a hospital based skilled care unit under the PPS system. Some of your activities brought back memories of activities I have enjoyed in the past and had not thought about in years (ie paper folding).

I see the potential for these activities on my unit.                                                                Barbara P.

My name is Elizabeth Davis. I am an OT and live in MA. I came across your book advertised in the OT advance. I went to your web space and really enjoyed the site. What an excellent idea. I congratulate you on doing this to keep the activity in OT. I trained at a time when activity was essential to OT. I am now doing hand therapy and feel more and more like a PT but wanting to be an OT. I have tried different ways to practically introduce activity. I must admit I am often dry when it comes to ideas and don't have the time to research. Just reading the intro to your book sparked many ideas that I could use tomorrow in the clinic.

Keep up the good work!

I am a fourth block OT student at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. One of my instructors suggested "Empowering Occupational Therapy" for us, as new therapists on the verge of beginning our careers. I was amazed to fall upon your website.

I am also very interested in any packets, books or helpful information you suggest for new therapists. Feel free to contact me via Email and I will share this information with my block, instructors, and our program director.

Thank You,

Angela M.

I've been out of OT school for about a year now.  As an entry-level therapist (and hopefully I always will) I am diligently seeking out new info and ideas in order to provide the best quality care as well as client centered care to my clients.  I am so excited I ran across your website and found your book .  Yes, working in a fast paced inpatient setting, trying to work with 3-4 clients at a time puts "just a little" pressure on me.    I can't wait to receive your book.  I believe that the ideas offered will not only stimulate my creativity but provide the greatest reward to my clients.

I must tell every OT I know about this book!

(anonymous evaluations from students and new graduates)

This will be so helpful not only in my fieldwork, but also in practice.

It helps to have an activity my client is excited about. I can see how it's much more beneficial than exercise--the client is self-motivated.

This is OT, I don't want to use pegs and cones with my clients.
